Rome. In Italy, the number of new coronavirus infections rose from 28,244 to 30,550 on Wednesday compared to the previous day, according to the Ministry of Health. There were also 352 deaths, one less than the previous day. The number of deaths of infected persons in Italy since the beginning of the epidemic in February thus rose to 39,764. 211,831 tests were performed within 24 hours, 14.4 percent of which were positive.
The number of confirmed active cases rose to 443,235 on Wednesday, with 418,827 people in quarantine. The number of Covid-19 patients treated in hospitals increased from 21,114 to 22,116 compared to the previous day, the Italian authorities further announced. There were 2,292 patients in intensive care units.
The Italian government plans to further tighten the measures due to the massive increase in corona numbers. These will come into force on Thursday. Thus, the government wants to decide on lockdowns in corona hotspots. The head of government Giuseppe Conte announced a nightly curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., as well as the closure of the shopping centers on weekends. Excluded from the measure are grocery stores, tobacconists, newsstands and pharmacies located there. Museums and exhibitions will be closed. A 50 percent reduction in the number of seats on public transport is also planned. Distance learning is to be expanded.
